Picture Windows

Large fixed windows designed to frame your view and maximize natural light.

Picture Window Characteristics

Picture windows are fixed glass panels, typically larger than other window types. They're called "picture windows" because they frame views like a picture. Without operable components, they offer excellent energy efficiency and minimal air leakage. However, the large glass area makes them susceptible to specific problems.

Common Picture Window Problems

Thermal stress cracks occur when there's a significant temperature difference across the glass surface. This commonly happens when part of a large window is shaded while another part is in direct sunlight. The crack typically starts at the edge and moves across the glass in a relatively straight line.

Foggy glass (seal failure) is highly visible in picture windows. The condensation or haze between panes obscures the view—the main purpose of the window. Large sealed units may fail faster because the glass expansion and contraction with temperature changes puts more stress on the edge seal.

Impact damage from debris, storms, or accidents requires glass replacement. We handle emergency repairs for broken picture windows.

Frame deterioration can occur over time, especially in wood frames exposed to weather. The frame may need repair before or along with glass replacement.

Picture Window Glass Replacement

Replacing glass in picture windows requires careful handling due to size and weight. We measure precisely, order custom-sized sealed units, and install with proper support and sealing. For very large windows, we may need specialized equipment for safe handling.

Glass Options for Picture Windows

  • Standard clear insulated glass units
  • Low-E coatings for improved energy efficiency
  • Tinted glass for solar heat reduction
  • Triple-pane options for maximum insulation
  • Laminated glass for safety and security

Preventing Thermal Stress Cracks

Avoid placing dark objects like furniture against picture windows where they can absorb and concentrate heat. Keep blinds open or at least partially raised to reduce temperature differences across the glass surface. Trim trees or shrubs that cast partial shade on the window.
